8 Aboriginal Ways of Learning: A Gift for Every Child

Bringing ancient wisdom into modern learning at Labelleworldkids

What is the 8 Ways Framework?

A beautiful Indigenous pedagogy that enhances how ALL children learn - not just through content, but through authentic Aboriginal learning processes that benefit every little mind.

The 8 Ways Your Child Learns:

🗣️ Story Sharing - Learning through narrative and storytelling "Every STEAM discovery becomes a story to remember"

🗺️ Learning Maps - Visualizing learning journeys and processes
"Mapping our daily adventures from morning circle to creation time"

👐 Non-Verbal - Hands-on, movement-based learning "Little hands exploring, building, creating without words"

🎨 Symbols & Images - Using visuals and metaphors to understand "Pictures that speak louder than explanations"

🌿 Land Links - Connecting learning to place and environment "Honouring the Brisbane land where we learn and grow"

🌀 Non-Linear - Creative, lateral thinking approaches "Following curiosity wherever it leads us"

🔧 Deconstruct/Reconstruct - Breaking down to build understanding "Taking apart to discover how things work"

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Community Links - Learning connected to real-life relationships "Every lesson connects to family, community, and belonging"

Why This Matters for Your Family:

This framework creates deeper, more meaningful learning that honors Indigenous wisdom while building the confident, creative thinkers of tomorrow.

🌟 Educator Tip: Transform Daily Transitions with 8 Aboriginal Ways of Learning

A gentle approach that honours Indigenous wisdom while creating smoother classroom flow

Try These Simple Transition Strategies:

📖 Story Sharing Transitions: Create "Transition Tales" - brief narratives that bridge activities "Our morning circle story is complete, and now our exploration adventure begins..." Help children understand their day through storytelling flow

🎨 Symbols & Images:

  • Visual cues: Simple symbols for different parts of the day (circle for gathering, hands for creating)

  • Activity totems: Children can hold or see symbols that represent each transition

  • Emotion symbols: Let children express how they feel about moving between activities

🤲 Non-Verbal Transitions:

  • Movement rituals: Gentle stretches or walking patterns between activities

  • Mindful moments: Simple breathing exercises using body awareness

  • Soft signals: Hand gestures or gentle touch cues instead of verbal commands

🌿 Land Links:

  • Nature acknowledgment: Even indoors, connect to the land you're on

  • Seasonal awareness: "The afternoon light tells us it's time for..."

  • Place-based language: Moving from "learning circle" to "creation space"

🗺️ Learning Maps:

  • Visual daily journey: Simple pictorial timeline showing the day's flow

  • "Where are we now?" check-ins: Help children locate themselves in the day's rhythm

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Community Links:

  • Family connections: "We carry our family's love with us as we move to..."

  • Peer rituals: Transition activities that honor the learning community

Why This Works:

This approach creates gentle, meaningful transitions that reduce anxiety while honoring Indigenous pedagogy. Children feel more secure when transitions have purpose and connection.

Start Small: Try just one or two approaches first - perhaps story transitions and visual symbols!

What transition challenges do you face in your classroom? 🌿
